Peggle: Its all Balls and....Balls

Popcap, the kings of puzzle games, and the creator of  plants vs zombies, have quite a varied set of games. On one hand you have Bejewelled, which is quite similar to most puzzle games, yet still draws you back. On the otherhand, Peggle is quite an original puzzler, involving balls....lots of balls

For the 2nd post of christmas, we will take a look at peggle.

Peggle is a puzzle game with a simple concept, You have to fire balls down to hit other balls, until you have hit all the orange balls, and therefore win. Like this...

Purple balls mean more points, and green balls mean power ups, which can include fire balls or lots a balls. If you score over 25,000 points with one ball, or catch it in the moving hole at the bottom, you get a free ball, to hit other balls with. (Indeed)

Levels are varied and enjoyable, Including gimmicks like moving balls, teleporters, and themed levels (one is in the shape of a car) And the power ups are good too. Unlocked in adventure mode, a mode which plays throguh all 65 levels in order, unlocks more 'peggle masters' for you to use. Powerups include superguide, which helps aim shots, double ball, which splits the ball into 2, and fire ball, which burns though balls without boucning off them.

Once the adventure mode is over, there are three other modes for you to enjoy. Quickplay allows you to play any level....quickly. Duel mode allows you to compete with an AI or a second player (using hotseat style multiplayer) to get the most points of a single level. Here, you take turns firing balls on the SAME level (You both use the same level, you dont get one each to try and beat each others scores, so aim for the green balls quick). The person with the most points at the end wins. Although this is very enjoyable, there is no online play included, and the Ai seem to be extroadinarily lucky at times.

Last mode is Challenge mode, which consists of 75 challenges for yyou to try once you finish the game. These range from getting a certain number of points on a level, to completeting a level with only 2 balls to start with. These add replayablility to the levels after adventure mode is done.

There is also a replay feature in the game, in which you can save replays to view later. Peggle montage anyone?

Overall the game is fun and enjoyable for a relaxing game, but overall the gameplay feels like luck alot of the time. Adventure mod lasts about 3-6 hours, butt the other modes make it longer. I reccomend if you like balls.

What pwms:

Simple but fun gameplay
A variety of levels
Addicting
Good replayability
Cheap
ITS ALL ABOUT BALLS

What Fails

Game seems heavily lucked based rather than skill
Ai are too lucky
No online play

Overall 9/10
Popcap deliver a great game...about balls.

Recommend: If you like puzzle games and/or balls

(I belive balls were mentioned a little bit in this review)

The 12 posts of christmas

Hey guys, as you can see, I havent posted here recently. I plan to fix this now. As you probably know (and if you dont, where in this world dont you live),  it is the festive season, and therefore it is time for...

THE TWELVE POSTS OF CHRISTMAS

Thats always confused me, why is it twelve days of christmas?

But on topic, this december I plan to write twelve posts (this is one, so technically 11 more) About things on my mind. From Tactics to Peggle, this proves to be an eventful...or non eventful, month.

So, as I flex my fingers, grab a coke and turn on rainymood, its time for some writing...

Dont moan at your master- A l4D bot tribute

Your Ai allies in the zombie apocalyspe, the ones they call Francis, Zoey, Louis, and Bill. In the times when you have no online, or poor connection, they are your only hope to survive this sdisaster alive. Back in the days of the demo, when the game was like a revolution to game mechancis and the such. Back then, they were treated like mastrs of the game. Shooting the special infected before you can even name which one is which, sticking extremely close, protecting you at all costs, healing you, reviving you, and being the player youd one day hope to be.

Till you got the game.

Yes, after youd grown accustomed to the game, the Ai, and rbeing able to play online, you begin to realise just how patheticly mediocre the bots are. Taken ages to save you from that hunter, healing you at bad moments, jumping in the way if bullets, or off a cliff, the bots end up making you join team zombie and kill them all.

But should we be so tough on them. I mean, before hand we used to look up to them, learn from them, rely on them. Now we lead them through like petrified children, but they were the ones who taught us to do it. Yes, as much as we despise them now, I can admit that they literally taught me how to survive horde after horde.

So what have they taught us, you may ask? Well, theyve taught ME...

1) Group spacing- Where to stand in a group, especially during hordes. Watching out for any unguarded openings, and not shooting teamates in the back, but trusting them.

2)Healing Teamates- When to heal, where to heal, why to heal? (if that makes sense) and to not be a selfish faggot and share amongst the team, considering everyones chances of survival.

3) Stick together- As much as you learn this from one of the AI's flaws, you learn that running ahead causes a snaeaky hunter to pounce you, draining your life points before you can say, 'wow, this hear hoodie guy appears to look infected, and hes clawing the shit out of me'

4) Know your infected- What type is it, when am I at risk, what the best weapon to use, whats the best stragety, run or shoot? RUN OR SHOOT? OR BOTH?

5) Aim, ya faggot- Not only shooting where ther be zombies, but not shooting when ther be humans.

6)Strategy trying- When you play with bots, you have the ability to try out stuff at your will, without pissing off any online players. What works and what doesen't

7) New grenade type- Due to the fact that Ai cant use grenades, you have the disadvantage of only having one grenade at once. Therefore strategy is essential, which is good for further games.

8) Know your equipment- Wepons and the such, watching the ai makes you realise tactics such as using the hunting rifle and what guns work well together in what situations

9) Know your role- What are you doing in the team, are you the short range close quarters guy, the sniper, the healer. Knowing when to do what actions are essential.

10) And last but not least, all the little things- Searching rooms, saving people from tanks, knowing where your allies are etc etc etc, this goes on for ever and ever

So next time you insult francis for teabagging your corpse, the next time Bill jumps in the way of a shotgun blast, the times when zoey commits suicide, or when lois heals you as a tank approaches, remember that they taught you what you know about survival, and without them could be very underskilled...or you could just sigh and team kill them all, up to you?

Also, has everyone else noticed that the aperfect online team is 3 players and a bot. The bot helps get rid of tricky infected, as well as other stuff, without being too much of a blunder.

Also, L4d2 bots? better than the 1st? we could never answer this, but now we have no mercy on both games, we could give a accurate guess.

NOTE: I did have many other points in this topic, but forgot them along the way. If you have any more ideas, post them below, thanks.

Medal of honour beta Follows cod off a cliff

First off, sorry for the lateness of this post, ive been fairly busy doing things.

Onto the post.

If you have steam (like you should, considering its free) you would have had a 4 day medal of honour multiplayer beta, in which you get 2 levels with different gamemodes (one being domination style and one being Tf2's attack/defend style). You also get some level ups for each of the 3 classes, rifleman, special ops and sniper, which can be unlocked by playing the class you want. its quite big

...but quantity does not mean quality, and DEFINTAELY not in this case.

The gameplay is similar to cod mixed with battlefield bad company (so even smaller, and you thought BC was small mapped, BF2 players) in which the fights are fought similar to cod, shoot, and one of you wins, seemingly by pot luck. The health is similar to cod, you get attacked first youre probably gonna die, whith snipers getting one hit body shot kills. Camping is the name of the game alot here, the spawns can be spawn capped, hooray as I die as I respawn yet again. The weapons in the demo arent too different, with a smaller ak47 for the special ops and a battle rifle sniper for the sniper class, however, each faction has different weapons avalible. Each class has a special weapon, m203s and rocket launchers aplenty, add that to the small maps and the game becomes rocket tennis.

Which brings me onto the maps, The first one is a small domination map set in trenches. It is a basic cross style map (think of a first aid sign but obviously not as straight) which means theres always a chance to have players sneak round and break up even the best of teams. This map is clearly not a team map, just a free for all, where every now and again some guy will go for the domination points, only to have 1 second of fire on them and poof, their back at the spawn camp, with a 50% chance of insta death when they return to the field. The maps have alot of small building, perfect for grenade spamming and trapping lone troopers, which means walking around in teams of twos or threes is really effective. Overall this map is too small and too hectic, the outcomes seem too random.

The second map is set in the mountains, and consists of the terrorists stopping the army from capturing 5 control points. The attackers have a time limit and reinforcement limit, which gets replenished as you capture the points. This level greatly favours the defenders, as most of the points consist of the attackers running over a hill, where the defenders are well hidden/camoflauged picking them off. The only real tactic for the attackers is some sneaky snipers to lower the defenses as the rest skillfully rush. but even then, thats only one capture point. Overall, this map is unbalanced and still too close for comfort.

The upgrades are favourable to the player who plays more. Upgrades such as more ammo and iron sights make the player more powerful, and the ability to have 3 attachments makes him all the more powerful. Which makes the new players highly underpowered compared to the rest. Which is bad. VERY. Im all for upgrades and stuff, while while games like call of duty 4 did it fairly well, MOH does not.

Im pretty sure ive missed some things I was gonna put in, but as you can tell, I wasnt impressed, and I highly reccomend you avoid this if your gonna wanna play online alot, which is pretty much what most people will do.

Old updates moved

Hi guys, Ive moved all the old updates over to the new blog, I will start writing new stuff soon, enjoy!

The might of valve

First off, I would like to apologize for the lateness of this post (its not even really weekedn any more). I had to get a wireless dongle for my computer, and till then I was internetless. I has it now, problem solved. Its actually quite good, I got a gaming one, and all reccomended servers have gotten between 15-30 ping most of the time. Though I did manage to push my computer back under my desk, pushing it downwards and almost breaking it (This was before I tried to use it on games, so I hope I didnt damage it, and it is infact better, because I payed £45 for it 0_o)

Anyway, onto topic, this one might be shorter than the rest, mainly because its late, but also because its something I wanna write, but Im not sure how much I can write about it.

Anyway, if you actually play good games, and not call of duty and fifa all the time, you will have heard of valve. Valve, in my opinion, make the best first person shooters ever (well, its the only genre they make) and I will review some in the future.. They are also, in my opinion, the best developers ever. They give so much stuff away free, from DLC  to the central pc gaming hub, Steam. And their games are cheap too.

Which is the topic of todays post.

If youve used steam, you will  know about the store. If not, theirs a store on it. Here you can buy the latest games, DLC, retro games and indie games, and at good prices too. Ive found tons of great indie games this way, nice, cheap options to break boring afternoons. But the steam store is a good way for these indie develepors to get their games known, without having to pay too much to advertising, as well as get users on servers and every aspect of games.

But although valve supply this, they too, destory it

Think about the store prices a sec. The indie games are relatively cheap.

But so are valves games

Valve are the best for value of games. Although some games start at £30 (Left 4 dead 2 comes to mind) All their games are £15 or lower, even one being released free. And thats not generally because their old, with left 4 dead 2 still being £30 in shops, and the games being constantly updated with free stuff.

Add on the valve sales, with games going down to about £3, and the valve complete pack, and youve got some of the greatest bargains in the world. But what does this do to the indie games. Although its true that there on the store, they are constantly being crushed by the mightiness of valves power.

So, my fewllow steamers, we need not to fight back against valve, but merely support both communities. Id rather have both valve and indie games on the store, not just one or the other.

This weeks main update is still scheduled for tommrow, so see ya then

Anyone need any money?

Well, it arrived. My new gaming pc arrived Friday, and its all set up and ready to go. I've wanted to do this review for a while, but I didn't run on a reasonable spec on my old computer to justify my review. But now it has, and after trying it now, as well as my original knowledge, I'm ready to do this.
The question is, are you ready?
Sure?
Then lets begin
Killing floor is a budget game made by Tripwire. It was originally an unreal mod (I think it was on unreal tournament) The game started off as, and still is (unless there's a sale) £15, meaning its a nice fairly cheap game. But are you getting bang for your buck?
The aim of the game is to survive waves of zombie like creatures called ‘mutations’ (Nazi zombies comes to mind here) on your own or in 6 player teams. Every round the mutations get harder and more in numbers. Not only that, but there are many types of the buggers, including
Clots-The standard mutation, which can only grab and slash you, like a real zombie. But once it has you grabbed, you cant shake him off unless you kill him, or jump.
Gore fasts- Similar to clots, but run fast and have a giant sword arm. They cannot grab you like clots do though.
Bloats- Similar to a boomer of left 4 dead, except the bile hurts instead of attracting zombies
Stalkers-Invisible to the eye, unless there close
Crawlers- Spider like mutations that can leap and hide in ceilings and walls
Scrakes- Guys with chainsaws
Husks-Guys with flameguns.
and the flesh pound, a walking titan that will speed up when enraged.
But lets not forget the final boss, and huge monster that appears at the end of the final wave, with tons of health, a cloaking device, strong hands and a chain gun and rocket launcher, its none other than the patriarch. This self proclaiming ‘Father’ of the mutations needs to be tackled as a team, and is a worthy foe.
Sounds like a lot of work? Lucky for you, theirs a trader willing to help, and at the end of the round you can buy weapons from her and horrible prices. Guns range from AA12 shotguns to LAW’s, so there's something for everyone. Also, there are 6 perks you can choose from at the start of the game/lobby, so you can get guns cheaper in a particular section, more damage or more storage available. These level up consistently over games, up to level 6, and can greatly increase your characters power.
If you play solo in the game, you can customise the game settings in sandbox mode (though you wont earn any xp, and the options are limited) or add a mutator, such as only flesh pounds spawn. (0_o)
There are many good features in the game. If you pull of an impressive headshot, or kill 8 mutations with a single grenade, or something like that, you will gain slow motion time for a few seconds (everyone will in online games). This helps you recuperate in sticky situations, and allows the whole team some thinking time. Another good feature in game is that there are no certain spawn points. The game is designed to spawn mutations near you, in sensible and tactical areas, mostly behind you. This adds surprise to the games, and with clever map design, allows there to be no safe spots in the levels.
One thing I like about this game is the little things that other games don’t. The first aid injector can be used on yourself, but is more effective on one of your 5 friends in the game. There is also a welder for welding doors, but the maps are designed so this won’t guarantee safety. The trader moves places, so you have to go find her, and the levels are well thought out and varied. Another thing I noticed is the attention put into detail. Little things like the patriarch’s back story all add to the game play.
With every steam and pc game, there is great mod support for this game. Countless creative levels, such as a Shaun of the dead map, and new mutators to turn the game into counter strike style, or l4d versus style, their are so truly great ones out their. Or make them yourself, the game comes with a level editor, so you can mod to your hearts content (I personally haven't used it, so I cant tell you if its good or not though)
One thing I cant stand though is the terrible so called ‘English’ accents the players have. Yes, Tripwire are doing the thing everyone else does, get English people completely wrong. If I heard anyone talk like they talk in killing floor in real life, I would really really really want to punch them.
Another flaw that the game seems to have is how easy it is to be screwed over. countless times I've got caught on door frames, only to be separated from my team and engulfed by mutations seconds later…..and sometimes you get evil teammates not giving you any money to buy weapons, but now I'm just nit picking
Overall, Killing Floor is a small but sweet game, which can get repetitive, but is one that could get you hooked.
Oh, before I wrap this up, the updates Tripwire do (such as new maps) are free, so yay for free stuff
Score 8/10 (for its price)
Recommend to : Zombie lovers and Nazi zombie players

.....SawS

Saw has been something Ive loved for the past...2 months, when I decided to watch them all on a movie spree. The film is classified as horror, and the 1st (and possilby 2nd) ones are, but truth be told, as you go down the line it becomes more storytelling of the puzzle that is an old man named jigsaw. Not saying that this is a bad thing, I thoroughly enjoyed all the movies, but it just becomes less horror, more story with mixed in gore.

Now, there are two new SAW releases on the way. One is SAW 3D in the cinemas

The other is SAW 2: flesh and blood. Another game.

This is a perect chance for redemption. If you read my review last post, you will find that everything but the combat was fun (heck, I could probably put up with the repetitiveness, it was still fun afterall). Y'know when you look at a game and think 'How did a professional games developer make that section, or concept, and automatically think its so perfect it doesent need testing. Or worse, testing it and thinking ' THIS IS PERFECT'. Unless they have quicker hands than eyes, and the delay in the button press to action is only because his eyes cant keep up. One point I didnt mention in the review is the hand to hand combat is fairly on key, as in, its nowhere near as bad as using a weapon (gun excluded). What made Zombie! think that in a world where the protaganist is just a normal guy, fists > weapons. Is Tapp so weak that he cant lift a bat in less than 7 seconds? Hes a cop for crying out loud. And how does it make sense that you can just walk up to a guy with a bat and just quick punch him into submission. Like I said about bad guys trapping you in corners, you can do the same. It just makes the combat to easy and simple (combat stance, press x, then x, repeat until dead)  or too hard (Combat stance, press x, wait 7 seconds, die)

Im just gonna guess that they made the weapons hard to use because you get trophies for getting a kill with each weapon. I mean, I can understand making Tapp vunrerable to attacks, as it provides a greater risk of death, especially in a game like this. But make the combat enjoyable next time please.

Also, why on earth does the game tell you theres gonna be a trap. When you approach the first shotgun door, a helpful box comes up saying THER BE A SHOTGUN DOOR TRAP UP AHEAD. Why? im going to find out anyway, if I die the first time then lesson learned. Im not going to throw a hissy fit if I die, its part of the game. Another bad point about this game is that its TOO easy (note I only played through on normal, there is an insane difficulty) Stuff like the shotgun doors take so long to actually happen (one time I wasnt paying attention, then I realised and still stopped the trap, ive never been hit by it) some poison bits can be extended by using health hypos, and because you have so many (for 80% of the game I had the maximum) you could stroll through the puzzles.

The fact that sometimes you press action on something, it switches to another item, which in turn is a trap and insta kills you, is annoying too. And theres not enough gore for Tapps deaths, and there should be rooms full of unescapable traps (obviously for when you choose the wrong door in a puzzle)

Now, you may think for a guy who likes this game, I moan alot about it. Well I like to do that, point things out, and now im gonna talk about some good stuff.

Such as the atmosphere. I know I said it in the review, but its definately the best part of the game. Watching the tvs, hearing him talk, all the hints, Zombie! really did well in making the SAW universe. Another thing I liked was the branching puzzles, where you could choose a puzzle depending. This adds another playthrough, though I never did play through it again.

And I said it in the review, I know (I like to refer back) but sometimes the game is repetitive. But other times its orignal. One trap consists of you moving things out of the way of the exit. In a fridge room with icy water and air spewing in. As the puzzle carries on, the screen starts to fill with icy cracks, slowly but surely blocking your view, until its covered and Tapp freezes to death. What I found amusing at this bit was that I had unblocked the door just as the ice was about to close the last spot, but I couldnt see my character, and was running blindly into a wall near the door, eventually breaking out in the nic of time.

Hopefully SAW 2: Flesh and Blood will fix these problems. Ive seen some footage and some of the traps are very unique, and Konami said the game would be taking place in 5 different areas, rather than just one huge asylum (that asylum had alot of things in it, was it on a island or something?)

My minds gone blank now, I swear I had alot more to talk about. Im going to leave it there for now, but I resevre the right to talk more about Saw. I may edit this one (showing the edit) if no other post has been done.

Thanks for reading, see you next time

OH, do you know what I also like? Having the gun, seeing two inmates fighting, and shooting them both. Cause im mean like that.

OH, and Tapps a chicken

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beIsR7IuZFM

Thanks again.

It must be SawS

Hey guys, welcome to the first week of the blog. This week I rented SAW the game, a game based on the movie (obviously) with a sequel on the way.

So what did I think of this movie tie in. Is it like other movie tie in's, rubbish? or is it a crack in the wall of bad movie games?

The game takes place between saw 1 and 2. You play as Detective Tapp, the guy who got pwned lots in the first movie (the one who got his throat slashed and a bullet shot was supposed to have finished him off) BUT hes back, but in a jigsaw trap (shock) after escaping a trap with merely a bash of buttons. Then the real game begins. You realise your in a abandoned asylum, and the only way to get out is fight your way through the mess and rubble

There are a range of puzzles, from using mirrors to timed runs. Most of them involve references to SAW, be it new or old. The puzzles arent imaginative, and sometimes the physics are off slightly (In one trap your supposed to manoveur through acid or needles, but simply starting the trap and pressing X will get you the reward/ key item.

Your given a lighter at the start of the game, but their are 3 diffrent light sources to be found, each with its own advantage. Take the lighter, the weakest of the lights, but you can make molotov cocktails burn. Or the camera, a reference to the first film. In which the camera will provide a full picture of everything seen, but will freeze the screen for a few seconds, causing slight problems. Or the flashlight, which shows all the way to the far wall, but only a small area. Choosing which one to use could mean an advantage in different situations.

Your not alone in this asylum. Jigsaw fixed your bullet wound that supposedly killed Tapp, but replaced it with a key. This key isnt for Tapp to cutt into himself to get, infact its useless to him, but Jigsaw managed to convince "residents" of the asylum and his victims that the only way out is to kill you and get the key. With everyone gunning for you, sometimes, Tapp will have to fight his way through, and this is where the game really blunders, the controls are ruined in combat, attacking will take a while to actually work after a button press, and Tapp will run towards the enemy, readying himself before attacking. This almost guarantees certainty that you will get hit. Sometimes your trapped in a corner, unable to attack while an enemy lashes you towards death with quick punches.

There are, however, traps to help (or hinder you) during your "game". One of the most memorable ones is the shotgun tripwire. These provide an insta kill for you and enemies, and if you managed to disarm a trap, you would gain the equipment neccesary to make your own, given the ability to lead mental men into their merry doom. Although the game keeps up with SAW references, this becomes extremely annoying when going round every corner results in insta death due to a tripwire unseen.

Their are also shotgun doors, in which you have to press a button to disarm it ( the worlds slowest QTE) and traps in which you can plany to stun your foes.

The atmostphere in the asylum is quite exciting, yet repetitive at points. As you make your way through, you will notice victims in traps, failing their test, and other things to do with saw. You will even see asylum residents fighting each other, thinking that each one has a key to escape. The story is well done, with references back to the first movie. Each chapter requires Tapp to save someone from his past, with notes and clips referencing not only to the victim and Tapps relationship, but what theve done recently, and why there in the trap itself. Their are also files based on how the asylum started, and ultimately failed and went bankrupt. Overall the environment is fantastic, and the story is amazing too, especially if you like SAW, but some traps and set pieces are repeated, causing disapointment

Unfortuntately, alot of the actions in the game are repetitive to, although set pieces and unique traps vary alot, searching for items can be annoying, as well as checking every room for these items. The difficulty of this game is also very low (I only played on normal due to the game being a rent, but i generally have max health syringes 99% of the time)

Overall, the game is very atmospheric. The story is excellent and very SAW like, most of the traps unique, and it keeps dragging you to find out the truth. Its also quite thrilling, especially towards the end, as the dreaded pighead becomes nearer and more violent by each sighting. Howeverm the combat lets this game down greatly, making it just another chore, and the game can be repetitive at times. This is a shame, because you cant help but think the game is fairly meh when your playing it, but it keeps dragging you back for more

Score: 6/10
Gametime: about 6-8 hours for a playthrough
Reccomend it to: SAW fans.

See ya next week
